About Us

Kathleen Choi & Sook Nyul Choi are a mother-daughter writing duo dedicated to storytelling that bridges generations, celebrates Korean and Asian culture and heritage, and personal experiences. The mother-daughter team worked collaboratively on the picturebooks Halmoni and the Picnic, Yunmi and Halmoni’s Trip, and The Best Older Sister, and are excited to announce a new book Giving Thanks with Halmoni: Celebrating Chuseok, the Korean Harvest Festival.

Sook Nyul Choi

Sook Nyul Choi is a celebrated Korean American author whose books have introduced generations of young readers to Korean history and culture. Her acclaimed young adult trilogy includes:

  • The Year of Impossible Goodbyes — The gripping story of a young Korean girl’s life in Japanese-occupied northern Korea and her harrowing escape to South Korea after the end of World War II.

  • Echoes of the White Giraffe — A moving sequel about life as a refugee during the Korean War.

  • Gathering of Pearls — The final book in the trilogy shares Sookan’s experiences coming to the United States to attend college.   

The trilogy has been translated into many languages and is widely recognized for its portrayal of resilience and identity during this tumultuous period of history.

Kathleen Choi

Kathleen Choi is a writer and editor.  Her first job as a child actress on Sesame Street sparked a lifelong interest in education.  She currently is a writer and managing editor of District Management Journal, a journal on education management.  She also is a founding member and board member of FitMoney, a non-profit providing free, unbiased financial literacy education. 

Born and raised in New York City, Kathleen is a proud Korean American, passionate about keeping alive Korean traditions and celebrating Korean culture. She loves collaborating with her mother Sook Nyul Choi to write picturebooks featuring Korean traditions and culture.
